What is motorbike insurance?

As a public road user in the UK, taking out insurance for your motorcycle is a legal requirement.

Motorcycle insurance gives you compensation if your bike is damaged or stolen. It also helps cover other road users in the event they’re involved in an accident with your bike. There are different types of motorcycle insurance – the level of cover you take out will affect what is covered on your policy.

How much does motorbike insurance cost?

Motorbike insurance doesn’t have to be expensive, especially if you’ve been able to build up a no claims bonus (NCB). Even if you’re a new rider or you’ve previously got convictions and are struggling to get affordable cover, speak to us for a quote – we’re confident we offer some of the most affordable motorbike insurance policies available.

Plus, with us, you only pay for the features that are important to you, meaning you don’t have to pay for extra benefits you’ll never use.

  • How you use your bike

What are the different types of motorbike insurance?

This depends on the type of motorbike insurance you take out. There are three main types of insurance for your motorcycle, which we can tailor to suit your needs. They are:

  • Third party only
  • Third party, fire and theft
  • Comprehensive cover

Third party only

Third party cover is the minimum level of cover that you need to drive on UK roads; having this in place is a legal requirement.

Third party cover simply insures you in the event that you cause damage to other vehicles, persons, or property in an accident. It will not cover any damage to you or to your bike.

“Laid up”, fire and theft cover, and short-term cover is also available.

Read more about third party cover in our blog.

Third party, fire and theft

Third party, fire and theft cover is similar to third party cover in that it insures you in the event you damage other vehicles, people or property and does not cover any damage to you or your bike. This type of cover also includes insurance against damage caused by fire and theft.

Fully comprehensive cover

Fully comprehensive insurance covers the above but also your motorcycle in the event it was involved in an accident or by fire or theft. Malicious damage, flood damage and accidental damage would also be covered but exclusions can apply. Read more about fully comprehensive cover in our blog.

FAQs

What details do I need to get an insurance quote?

You’ll need to give us personal information, such as your name and address, and details on your motorcycle, including its make and model, approximate value, and the date you bought it. We’ll also need to know about your riding or driving experience and any unspent convictions or accidents you’ve had and details on the security features of your bike.

How can I prove my no claims bonus?

The renewal letter from your current insurer will usually provide proof of no claims. If not, you can contact your previous insurer and request that they send it to you.

How can I tell if my motorbike is insured?

If you’re not sure whether you’ve already taken out insurance for your motorbike, there are a number of ways you can check this. Firstly, take a look through your emails by searching for “motorbike insurance” or “motorcycle insurance”. You might also want to add “policy” to the search to help narrow it down.

In the event that this doesn’t yield any results, you can use askMID to find out if your motorbike is already insured. All you need for this is your vehicle registration number. Note that this tool doesn’t tell you which company you’re insured with; it just lets you know whether or not your bike is insured. You’ll have to ring around companies or search for insurance providers in your inbox to find out which insurer you’re covered with.

In the event you don’t have insurance, call Bikesure to get a fast and affordable quote. We offer cover that’s tailored to your needs and budget.

I own a custom or modified bike – can I still get cover?

Yes, we offer cover for all types of bikes, including fully custom or modified bikes.

Can I get cover as a new rider?

Whether you’re 16 and have just passed your CBT or you’ve been riding for decades, we can offer you cover. As a new rider, you might find that your insurance policy is quite expensive. Speak to us over the phone and we’ll do our best to beat any quote you’ve already received.

Can I get cover for multiple bikes?

Yes, with our multi-bike insurance policy, you can get cover for all types of bikes on one policy. Whether you own a whole collection or just a couple of runarounds, our cover makes it easy for you to manage your policies.

Plus, we offer discounts to those who take out insurance for multiple bikes with us.

Do I need a motorcycle license to get insured?

Even if you don’t have a motorcycle license, it’s imperative that if you own a bike, you make sure it’s insured. Alternatively, you can declare your motorbike as off the road (SORN), which means that it’s not being used on public roads.

Even if you aren’t using your motorbike and you’ve made it SORN, it might still be a good idea to take out laid-up motorbike insurance. This helps protect your bike against fire and theft.

Can I change the motorbike on my insurance?

You’ll need to transfer your motorbike insurance from your old bike to the new bike. If you’ve taken out insurance with us on the old bike, let us know and we can transfer the cover.

Can I ride another bike on my insurance?

This depends on your insurance policy. Although some policies include cover for riding other bikes, chances are this will be third party only cover rather than fully comprehensive. This means that if the bike is damaged, you won’t be able to claim on your insurance.

If you’d prefer the bike to have fully comprehensive cover, give us a call and we can provide you with a fast and affordable motorbike insurance quote.

Can I add another person to my policy?

You can add a friend or family member to your policy as a named driver. Just let us know who you’d like to add and we can help. You can also add people yourself by logging into our online portal.

Can I use my motorbike abroad?

Yes, all our standard motorbike insurance policies include up to 90 days’ cover in European Commission countries. Let us know if you need cover for longer or you’re planning on travelling outside of the EU and we might be able to help.

How do I renew my bike insurance?

If your motorbike insurance policy is coming up for renewal, let us know and we can ensure you remain covered.

Can I change my policy during renewal?

Yes, if you’d like to change anything related to your policy, let us know when you speak to our team and we can help.

Does motorbike insurance cover my pillion passenger?

If you stated in your application that you’ll be carrying pillion passengers, your passengers should be covered, but do check your policy certificate and schedule to be sure.

You can carry pillion riders on your motorbike provided you are over 17 and hold either a full UK motorcycle licence, an A1 or an A2 motorcycle licence.

If you have a bike that is under 50cc, you can automatically carry a pillion if you have a full UK car licence dated from before 01/02/2001.

If you obtained your full UK licence after this date, you must take a CBT first, but this is then valid for life rather than the normal 2 years for CBTs. This will only ever apply to mopeds.

In all cases, it’s advisable to tell your insurance company if you intend to carry a pillion to make sure they have catered for pillion cover.

Does motorbike insurance cover wheel damage or punctures?

Make sure to check your policy as most motorbike insurance policies don’t include cover for wheel damage of punctures. If you find that you have a puncture, our breakdown cover can help you get back on the road again quickly.

Does motorcycle insurance cover modifications?

Many insurance policies don’t include cover for modifications, but thankfully as a specialist insurance broker, we’re able to cover all types of bikes, including those that have been modified. Whether you’ve improved your motorbike’s performance or you’ve restored it to its former glory, tell us which mods you have and we can help you get the right insurance.

Can I take my motorbike to Europe?

With one of our insurance policies, you can take your motorbike to European Commission countries for up to 90 days. Just let us know you plan to travel and we can add this to your policy.

Find out more in our in-depth guide to the motorcycle licence.

Can I insure my motorbike before I pass my test?

You can insure your motorbike before you pass your test. If you plan on using the bike for your test, you might want to consider learner rider insurance. And if you don’t, a laid-up insurance policy would protect your vehicle against fire and theft while it isn’t being used.

Do you need motorcycle insurance in the UK?

Yes, if you plan on riding your motorcycle on UK public roads, motorbike insurance is a legal requirement. If you don’t have cover in place, you would be breaking the law. Doing so can cause you to get points on your licence.

Is motorbike insurance cheaper with a full licence?

Your motorcycle insurance can be cheaper if you get a full licence, but it also depends on if you upgrade to a more powerful bike, if you add pillion cover, and many other factors. That being said, getting your full motorcycle licence tells us that you ride safely, which can help reduce your premiums.

Insurance to ride any bike

Ever fancied borrowing a friend’s or family member’s bike, but been worried that you might not be insured should you have an accident?

With Bikesure’s “ride any bike” insurance, you could add the equivalent of comprehensive insurance to your policy while you ride other people’s bikes – leaving you and the owner safe in the knowledge that you’re covered, whatever happens.

With up to a £10,000 claims limit, accidental damage, third party, fire, and theft cover included, and no need to let us know every time you borrow a new bike, you’ll be free to hop on and hit the road whenever you like.

Agreed Value Insurance

Whatever bike you ride, from a scooter to a cruiser, dirt bike to superbike, you want to know that you can claim back the full value of your bike if it’s written off.

With agreed value insurance from Bikesure, we’ll work with you to agree the true value of your bike when you take out a policy, and make sure that you get that sum back when you need to claim – helping you to fund a replacement bike without leaving you out of pocket.

Helmet and leathers

It’s no secret that your helmet and leathers are some of the most important items for staying safe on a bike – and that they can cost hundreds of pounds to replace if damaged.

For just £29.99 a year, our helmet and leathers insurance will cover up to £1,500 in the costs involved with repairing or replacing your leathers and helmet (or £40.00 for £3,000 in costs), including full leathers and other protective clothing, boots and gloves.

With a low £50 excess for each claim, insuring your protective kit could save you hundreds following an accident, and claims on your helmet and leathers policy won’t affect your bike no claims bonus.

Keycare Insurance

If you’ve ever lost your keys, you’ll know that it’s no laughing matter, and can in fact end up costing you a lot of money in locksmith fees.

For just £19.00 a year, our keycare insurance policy will cover locksmith expenses, replacement locks and keys, bike immobilizer replacement costs, vehicle hire costs, and transport costs if you’re stranded, up to a value of £1,500.

We’ll pay out if your keys are stolen, locked inside your home, or lost for 48 hours. Better yet, your keys are protected regardless of your location; we now cover keys worldwide.

For more information and to add keycare to your policy, speak to a member of our team today.

Motorcycle Breakdown

From just £62.00 a year, Bikesure Rescue provides gold-standard breakdown cover for your motorbike, offering 24 hour UK and EU roadside assistance and recovery, emergency accommodation costs, transport home, to a garage, or to a destination of your choice, and even an equivalent hire bike to help you get on your way after a breakdown.

We know that nobody wants to have their plans put on hold by a breakdown, or to be forced to hang around by the roadside for hours facing costly callout charges – so use Bikesure Rescue as your breakdown cover, and get motoring peace of mind at a price that suits you.
