Britain’s growing band of cyclists can now buy insurance that not only safeguards their two-wheeled investment, but also covers personal injury, legal expenses and breakdown in one package.
The new policy, from specialist insurance broker Bikesure, provides more comprehensive bicycle cover than found under a home insurance policy – and safeguards your home cover’s no claims bonus in the process.
With more than 500,000 bikes stolen each year, according to the Check That Bike! website, and nearly 20,000 people injured in cycling accidents in 2012, it’s never been more important to have the correct cover in place. Yet recent research suggests that 46 per cent of people in the UK have no cover for their bike at all.
Gerry Bucke, general manager at Bikesure, said the growth in the number people cycling in the wake of Team GB’s Olympic success and successive Tour de France winners Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome had created the demand for more focussed cycle insurance.
“Normally people cover their bikes under their home insurance policies, but the cover can be quite restrictive and will not include things like personal injury or breakdown cover,” he added.
“You will also often lose all of your home insurance no claims bonus by making a single claim, so it makes sense to insure your bike separately to get the right cover, and protect your home insurance premiums at the same time.”
Cover is suitable for everything from a custom-built racing bike valued up to £5,000 to a commuter bike and a children’s bike, with cover available for personal accident up to £10,000, third party liability, accidental damage, theft from your home, vehicle or while locked in public.
There is no age limit for riders, and cover extends to include theft from locked vehicles or if you bike is secured to a car rack.
Breakdown cover, costing £16 a year, will either carry out basic roadside repairs or take you and your bike to a chosen destination.
