If you want to look the part at the Bikesure sponsored Motorcycle Live 2019 you’ll need to rock up on the right set of wheels, so how do you fancy this 1990 Harley-Davidson FXSTS Springer Softail?
It’s going up for auction in the Collectors’ Motorcycles sale at the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum in Birmingham on Saturday (October 5). Bonhams is handling the sale and reckon the Softail could fetch £4,000-£6,500.
Harley Softail is iconic 90s
This machine would really look the part because the Bikesure stand at the show will pay tribute to some of the most iconic bikes of the 1990s. And they don’t come much more iconic than the Harley.
Harley’s Softails are so named because although they are styled to look as if they have rigid frames, they do of course have rear suspension.
Bonhams sale notes explain: “An important event in the lengthy development of Harley’s perennial v-twin occurred in 1984 with the introduction of the new all-alloy Evolution engine together with a diaphragm clutch, air-assisted shock absorbers, and toothed-belt final drive.
“By this time Harley-Davidson had freed itself from the American Machine & Foundry group, and one of the more significant developments of the immediately post-AMF era was the introduction in 1984 of the traditionally styled Softail.
“The Softail featured a cleverly disguised rear end looking like that of a pre-war ‘rigid’-framed Harley but was, in fact, sprung, as its name suggests, with the two dampers mounted beneath the frame.”
Softail has a “vintage” look
The Softail’s “vintage’” retro look was enhanced by a girder-type front fork with bottom link and centre spring.
This was the look Harley traditionalists had been longing for and the Springer Softail and its derivatives proved to be an enduring success.
