The lockdown roadmap for motorcyclists

England has started its roadmap out of lockdown with the return of students to schools on March 8, but there is still a long way to go until June.

While life could return to some kind of normality on June 21 riders can look forward to several landmarks dates in the build up to the summer that could see them get back on the road with fellow motorcyclists.

What are the national lockdown rules in England?

England will see several lockdown restrictions lift in spring, with the public able to exercise with one member outside of their household.

From March 29 you will be able to meet with up to five other people or two households outdoors, but should remain socially distant even on private property such as gardens. Further restrictions will be lifted from April 12, for the latest Government guidelines visit the Gov website.

Can I ride my motorcycle for leisure during the new Coronavirus lockdown?

You should only use your bike for essential travel to places of exercise, food shops and for medical supplies.

From March 29 you will be permitted to leave your local area. This means riders will be able to meet up with up to five fellow riders following the rule of six and go on socially distanced rides.

Can I go for a ride with fellow motorcyclists?

When the rule of six kicks in on March 29, providing the number of Covid-19 cases and the R rate remain low, you will be able to meet up with five fellow riders in England. While you will be unable to mix indoors, you will be able to plan out a journey to travel.

Can I still get an MOT during lockdown?

In short, yes you can still get an MOT in lockdown. Garages are permitted by the government to stay open during the third lockdown period, which means if you haven’t done so already you should think about booking your bike if your MoT is running out.

Can I take a driving or riding test or lesson during lockdown?

The DVSA and the MCIA have now confirmed that motorcycle training and CBTS are expected to resume from March 29. Theory tests will be available from April 12, with practical tests resuming on April 22.

What happens if I break the lockdown rules?

Fixed penalty notices of £200 can be issued for first offences, doubling for further offences up to a maximum of £6,400. If you hold, or are involved in holding, an illegal gathering of over 30 people, the police can issue fines of £10,000.

What are the new Covid-19 rules in Scotland?

The rules are more or less the same as those in England, though there’s no limit to the number of times you can exercise outside, and while construction and manufacturing remain open in both countries, most other services and stores will be closed. You can stay up to Scotland’s latest rules here.

Stay at home restrictions have now been lifted in Wales with the public now permitted to travel within their local area.
