Moped insurance: Why 16-18 year-olds choose 50cc bikes

The beauty of 50cc bikes is that they are so easy to learn on. They are usually “twist and go” budget peds with no gear-change to worry about.

They are remarkably good value too. You could get a top of the range 50cc ped for less than £2,000 and if your get a four-stroke engine there will be less maintenance to worry about.

The newer models also benefit from Euro 4 compliant engines providing improved fuel economy and reduced emissions.

They are light, maneuverable and nippy making them a great commuter and first time bike.

Most importantly for learner riders they are restricted to under 30 miles an hour meaning they can be ridden on an AM licence.

What is a category AM licence?

A category AM licence allows you to ride 2-wheeled or 3-wheeled vehicles with a maximum design speed of more than 25km/h (15.5mph) but not more than 45km/h (28mph).

This category also includes light quad bikes with unladen mass of not more than 350kg (not including batteries if it’s an electric vehicle) and a maximum design speed of more than 25km/h (15.5mph) but not more than 45km/h (28mph).

Because of the speed restrictions models under 50cc are the cheapest bikes to insure — even if you happen to be a learner or are still in your teens.

The Bikesure team has now crunched the numbers and can reveal the most popular 50cc bikes for 16-18-year-olds to insure as their first moped or scooter and the average premium quote offered.
