Loeb and Moses Simson started their company in 1856 as a steel and gun works. The company diversified into bicycles and cars at the turn of the last century. The Simson's were Jewish, so had to flee the country in 1936, and the Nazis consolidated the firm with others as BSW. The first motorbike came off the lines shortly thereafter. After the war the factory was in Soviet controlled East Germany, and production included some AWO425 250cc four stroke bikes and over 300,000 of these were produced. In the 60's on state diktat, production was shifted into two stroke mopeds and the famous Schwalbe scooters. After reunification, the market for Simson bikes declined and in 2003 the company was wound up.
