Norton of Birmingham began making motorcycles in 1902 and had a great racing tradition. After the war models such as the Norton Dominator were important mainstays of production, but in 1953 Norton was acquired by AMC, who owned Matchless, AJS, Francis Barnett and James, and in 1962 the Norton plant was closed and production of Norton bikes moved to Woolwich. This did not stop the pressure on the company from Japanese models and declining motorcycle sales, and in 1966 AMC collapsed and Norton became part of Norton Villiers, who introduced such models as the Norton Atlas and the legendary Norton Commando. An enforced merger with BSA-Triumph in 1972, coupled with a move back to the Midlands, as the new company consolidated production, which dwindled to nothing by 1975. In the 80s a revival of the Norton name as a Wankel engined racer but this was short lived and the Norton name has been dormant since 1992, although rumours of a comeback constantly circulate.
