Indian Motorcycles were established in 1901, and at one stage weHarley Davidson's biggest rival in the large engined cruiser market. The most famous products were the Indian Scout and Indian Chief cruisers, produced from the 1920s through to the 1950s. The company stopped all production in 1953 and for a while the name was applied to some Royal Enfield bikes, before passing to an importer of Matchless bikes. After this the name was applied to some tweaked Italjet bikes before fading away. In 1999 the Indian name made a comeback with the so-called Gilroy Indian company producing bikes inspired by the classic Indians of years gone by. This company went into receivership in 2003, but the New Indian company looks set to continue production with a whole new generation of Chiefs from 2009.
