Adalberto Garelli designed his own two-stroke engine, and with it won a competition to design a bike for the Italian military. From 1919 he started producing racing bikes, but after the second world war the company concentrated on small engined machines. Garelli still operate in Italy to this day and are owned by the Berlusconi family, although the scooters, such as the 50s styled Garelli Mosquito, are now manufactured in China.
