DKW was founded in Germany in 1916 and in 1932 became part of the Auto Union. Famous for cars as well as bikes, the heyday of the motorcycle division was in the 1930s, at which point DKW was the largest motorcycle company in the world. After the war the company continued on until the early sixties. Their most famous bike, the RT125 was produced initially in the 1930s and continued in production until the sixties. Since the firm had to give away the designs to this revolutionary two-stroke as war reparations it has reputedly been copied more than any other bike.
