Bikesure's tips on cutting the cost of bike insurance

news/posts/271-1.jpg" align="right" class="news" />Times are tough. Bikers, along with everyone else, are looking for ways they can make savings. And that even includes the essentials, such as insurance. But how can you reduce the cost without reducing the cover?

Bikesure has just released some money-saving tips for lowering motorcycle insurance costs. The company, one of the UK's biggest specialist bike insurance brokers, says that it still finds occasions where bikers are forgetting to tell them about potential money-saving factors that could slash premiums.

Get a qualification
The biggest saving bikers can make on their insurance is by proving that they have real riding skills and experience, with a qualification such as the Ride Drive scheme. In many cases Bikesure can give an immediate discount of as much as 25%, and for younger bike riders the total saving in the first year alone can often cover the cost of a Ride Drive course.

Not only does a discount continue year after year (provided there's no claim), but it can also be applied to the biker's car insurance.

Join an owners club
Join a club and this could provide an immediate saving. For example, Bikesure gives up to 15% discount to bikers who are current members of a recognised motorcycle or riders club.

And the discount doesn't stop at bikes. Club members can get further discounts on other insurance, such as car, motorhome or home insurance.

Going far?
Bikers can get another immediate discount with a Limited Mileage policy, and the lower the mileage, the bigger the savings. However, keep a watch on the milometer - the broker needs to know if the bike is likely to exceed the agreed mileage limit.

Multi bike?
Bikers with two or more bikes can often get a further discount by insuring both or all under a multi-bike policy.

Extra savings
Meanwhile there are a variety of bonus options that can come free. For example, Bikesure offers legal cover at no extra cost, and can often cover European touring jaunts at no extra cost as well - sometimes for as much as 90 days at a time.

Another way of reducing overall costs is to add breakdown insurance to the policy, instead of joining one of the big national breakdown organisations. It used to be that insuring a motorbike in Northern Ireland was ludicrously expensive - up to 50% more than in London. But no more. Bike insurance specialist Bikesure is now offering Northern Irish riders what it believes are the cheapest rates yet, many of which are even below the UK average.

"It's taking too long for some insurance providers to catch up with the reality of modern Northern Ireland," says Kevin Lee of Bikesure. "We've been pressing for rates that are appropriate to the risk. Now our underwriters have been able to respond and I have to say they've really gone the extra mile. In some cases premiums have been slashed by 75%."

Just a year ago, a Honda CBR 600 RR for a 26 year-old male mechanic with four years no claims bonus would have cost £582 to insure, for third party fire and theft cover (TPFT). Now Bikesure is offering insurance on the same machine, for the same rider, for just £183.

As well as standard bikes, Bikesure can cover just about any motorcycle in Northern Ireland, from 'twist & go's to performance, tourers and even customised bikes and trikes. For example, a 19 year-old student riding a 50cc scooter, such as an Aprilia Area 51, could pay as little as £137 (for a woman) or £196 (for a man) for TPFT insurance. A female shop owner aged 27 riding a Suzuki GSF 1200 Bandit would pay £105, TPFT. For a Boom Trike, a 46 year-old male optician might pay around £356, fully comp.

"We can now offer motor bikers in Northern Ireland a deal that's just as good as they would get if they lived elsewhere in the UK," Kevin Lee adds. "We expect other mainstream bike insurance providers to follow our lead."

Bikesure warns of rise in pothole-related accidents

"Even before the biking season really gets off the ground, we've seen a rise in pothole-related claims," says Kevin Lee of Bikesure. "Luckily so far we've had none with serious injuries, but it's a real possibility. A pothole can swallow a front wheel and throw a rider off instantly. We urge bikers to be very, very aware of the danger."

The winter weather that caused the potholes is clearing away, but the potholes themselves look like being here for a while, especially on some rural roads. Organisers of Spring biking tours throughout the country should take special care, suggests Kevin.

Bikesure offers these pothole awareness tips:

Puddles: don't assume they're benign, they could be rain-filled potholes hiding a nasty surprise.
On the edge: be aware that many potholes are created at the borders or edges of roads, where they can be disguised by plants, mud or debris.
Stay back: allow more space than usual behind the vehicle in front - it will give time to spot and avoid any potholes that cars or lorries simply drive over.
Slow down: riders who are not sure of the state of the road surface should take it more slowly than usual.
Get out of the rut: if the road a biker usually uses is full of potholes, find a different route.

Bikesure Makes PL Even Sweeter For Motorcycle Clubs

It was a prohibitive expense for many clubs, until Bikesure launched its club public liability (PL) scheme earlier this year. It cut the cost to as little as £110 per year and has been very popular - so much so that Bikesure is now expanding it to cover 'business all risk'.

This means that as well as cover for public liability, the insurance protects the club's possessions at a show, ranging from merchandise such as T-shirts to stands, graphics and flags.

And the best news is, Bikesure PL still costs from as little as £110 per year, for up to £1million public liability cover and £2,500-worth of club assets.
